2010 Game-A-Day Review

UW-Stout at UW-Whitewater
The UW-Whitewater Warhawks returned home for the first time in nearly a month and what a reception they received! A WIAC and school record 12,189 attended the 3:00 PM Family Day contest. Many arrived early as the Perkins' Stadium parking lot was filled with tailgaters several hours before the game. The Warhawks entered the game 4-0 and 1-0 in the WIAC. UW-Stout came in 3-1, 1-0 in the WIAC.
Stout came into the season projected by many to finish in the top three in the WIAC. Stout's strength is a very strong defense. Warhawks' coach Lance Leipold indicated as much the week of the game when he said, "Up front they're big, their second-level people run well and they do a great job of mixing up their fronts".
Stout started strong on their first possession. On their opening drive, the Blue Devils drove from their own 27 to the UW-W 5 using a balanced offense to work it's way down the field. However, The Wahawks stiffened after Stout had a first and goal on the Warhawk 5 yard line. The Blue Devils had to settle for a 25 yard field goal attempt. However, Stout missed their opportunity to strike first when freshman Richard Marteny missed from 25 yards out. Neither team scored in their next possessions and the first quarter ended scoreless. However, Kris Rosholt pinned the Blue Devils back on their own 1 with a 50 yard punt. When the UW-W defense held Stout without a first down, the Warhawks took over at the Stout 49 after a punt.
Giving UW-W a short field is a recipe for disaster and the Warhawks made the Blue Devils pay. Whitewater overcame two holding penalties, with a key 2nd and 17 Matt Blanchard to Adam Brandes 17 yard pass play to Stout's 16. Two plays later Blanchard and Brandes hooked up for 11 to the Stout 4. On 3rd and goal from the 2, Banchard hit Aaron Rusch for the TD and Whitewater grabbed a 7-0 lead. However, the Blue Devils showed their mettle as they drove 69 yards in 15 plays on their next possession to tie the score at 7. But the Warhawks were determined to regain the lead before halftime. They started with 2:25 on the clock from their own 20. Matt Blanchard threw 10 consecutive passes, completing 8 and moving UW-W to the Stout 10. However, from there, the Blue Devils stiffened and the Warhawks settled for a 22 yard Eric Kindler field goal and a 10-7 lead with 7 seconds remaining in the half.
On their first possession of the third quarter, the Warhawks drove 80 yards, capped by a 24 yard TD pass from Blanchard to Rusch. The score remained at 16-7 when the extra point failed. The Warhawk defense held the Blue Devils to one first down in two second half possessions as the 3rd quarter ended 16-7. Less than 2 minutes into the fourth quarter, Levell Coppage broke free to a 31 yard TD run. The conversion put UW-W's lead at 23-7. On Stout's next possession a combined sack by Louissaint Minett and Max Ford and another by Tyler Huber led to the Warhawks holding the Devils on downs at the Stout 40. Four Levell Coppage runs later, the Warhawks were in the end zone again, the TD from 4 yards out, and the Warhawks sealed the 30-7 victory.
On the day, the Warhawks out-gained the Blue Devils 468 to 238. The Warhawks averaged 6.7 yards per play, while holding Stout to 3.7 yards per play. Punter Kris Rosholt made the most of his opportunities as his two punts of 50 and 51 yards were both downed at the 1 yard line.
UW-Stout finished in 3rd place in the WIAC with a 4-3 record. The Blue Devils finished 6-4 overall. Their bid for second place was thwarted when they suffered a home loss, 27-21, to UW-Stevens Point. Their other conference loss was a 29-28 heartbreaker to UW-LaCrosse.
