UW-Whitewater at UW-Platteville
The UW-Whitewater Warhawks kicked off their 2010 WIAC season against the UW-Platteville Pioneers on a breezy 63ยบ Thursday evening at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium on the campus of UW-Platteville. Both teams had a September 25th bye and the WIAC office agreed to the schools' request to change the game from Saturday, October 2nd. Platteville put together a festive Family Night atmosphere for this rare Thursday night contest. The game was the 17th playing of the annual George Chryst Memorial Bowl, named after the late Pioneer coach. The Warhawks entered the night 3-0, while the Pioneers came in at 2-1.
Both teams started slowly and were held scoreless in their first two possessions. However, Pioneer QB Nick Anderson and WR Joe Burkeland changed that as they hooked up on passes of 23 and 57 yards in a two play scoring drive for the Pioneers. The UW-P lead was short lived as the Warhawks marched 82 yards over the next 5:42, capped by a seven yard Matt Blanchard TD run.
With the score tied 7-7, the Pioneers drove from their own 30 to the Warhawk 10 before stalling and settling for a FG and a 10-7 lead early in the 2nd quarter. The optimistic Pioneer fans were soon to experience a real strong dose of reality. UW-Whitewater took their first lead of the night on their next possession, an 80 yard TD drive culminated by a Blanchard to Adam Brandes 33 yard TD connection. A few minutes later, Blanchard hooked up with Brandes again, again from 33 yards out and UW-W led 21-7, the eventual halftime score.
The second half was all Warhawks. UW-W scored TD's on all four of their 3rd quarter possessions:
A Levell Coppage 8 yard run completed a 70 yard drive.
A Matt Blanchard to John Novak 16 yard TD pass finished a 24 yard scoring drive. The Warhawks got the ball when Max Ford recovered a fumble forced by Jon Baldwin.
After a Steve McCollom interception, the Warhawks drove 63 yards to a 3 yard Levell Coppage TD run.
The Warhawks extended their lead to 49-10 with a 55 yard Booker Stanley TD run.
Whitewater took the 49-10 lead into the fourth quarter. The Pioneers scored the final TD on a blocked punt. UW-W rode the legs of Antwan Anderson to run out the clock in the fourth quarter. Anderson had 15 carries for 61 yards in the fourth quarter.
Not surprisingly, the Warhawks dominated the final statistics. Whitewater controlled the ball for over 40 minutes. UW-W piled up 637 yards of total offense, while holding UW-P to (-12) yards rushing and 172 total yards. Matt Blanchard completed 24 passes in 30 attempts for 337 yards and 3 TD's. Levell Coppage led the Warhawks in rushing with 134 yards and 2 TD. Booker Stanley added 96 yards and a TD and Antwan Anderson gained 61.
Following their opening night loss to UW-W, Platteville won 3 of their next 4 games. However, season ending losses to Stout and Stevens Point left their final record at 3-4 in the WIAC and 5-5 overall.
