Campbellsville University is located in Campbellsville, Kentucky (about 80 miles south of Louisville) and competes in the Mid-South Conference (NAIA). The Tigers host the UW-Whitewater Warhawks at 12:00 PM (CST) on Saturday, September 18th.
The Coach
Coach Perry Thomas enters his 3rd season as the Tigers Head Coach. In 2008 he took over a program that was 0-10 the previous year and 5-26 the previous 3 years. In 2008, Perry's Tigers posted a 3-8 record before last season's 7-4 campaign. Perry has upgraded the athletes and the program is headed in the right direction under his leadership. Commenting on the strengths of his current team, coach Perry stated, "We're a great deal faster than we've been. We have team speed that fits our system really well. Our guys are more experienced.”
2010 So Far....
The Tigers come into Saturday's contest with a 2-1 record after a disappointing 33-21 loss at Cumberland University. The Tigers turned the ball over 6 times and saw 3 of the turnovers returned for touchdowns. CU out-gained Cumberland 385 to 205 in the contest, but fell behind 26-0 in large part due to the turnovers. Previously, the Tigers defeated Kentucky Christian 34-7 and Union College 47-36.
When the Tigers have the ball
CU is a team that likes to establish the run if they can. In their two victories, they gained 54.7% of their yardage by rushing the football. Against Cumberland, they threw 50 passes trying to play from behind. Sophomores Will Warf and Robert Hill have gotten most of the playing time at QB. Sophomore Nathan Cooper got significant playing time as well last week. Warf and Cooper are more traditional passing Quarterbacks while Hill can hurt a defense with his legs as well. Sophomore Mark Terry and junior Wayne Coffee lead the rushing attack that has averaged 165.7 yards per game and 216.5 per game in their two victories. Harold Small, All Mid-South a year ago, returns at wide receiver. This deep and fast unit also includes Stan Warrenhuffman (20 catches, 266 yards this year), and diminutive Demetric Ray (5'9", 170 lbs)
When the Warhawks have the ball
The CU defense was a takeaway machine in the first two games with 6 interceptions and 4 fumble recoveries in the first two games. Last week, the Tigers were limited to one fumble recovery and they lost the turnover battle 6-1. The final scores of the Tigers games have been very deceptive and potentially misleading to people trying to get a read on Campbellsville's defense. Opponents have scored 76 points in three games. However 4 of the opponent's TD's have been scored with the Tiger offense on the field! The defense has allowed merely 113 yards per game and 3.0 yards per carry rushing. Opponents' quarterbacks have gone only 24-59 (40.7%) with 6 interceptions. The team that had the most offensive success against the Tigers, Union college, gained 241 yards rushing (5.1 ypc) and 248 yards passing. However, Union threw 4 interceptions and lost 2 fumbles in their 47-36 loss.
