WIAC INSIDE THE NUMBERS: WEEK 2

UW-Whitewater 70 Dakota State 7
The Warhawks had 393 yards of total offense...at HALFTIME! Lavell Coppage, Antwan Anderson, and Booker Stanley became the first backfield trio in school history to each gain 100 yards rushing in the same game. DS had 16 drives that ended with 12 punts, 2 fumbles, 1 int, and 1 TD. UW-W had drives that ended with 10 TDs, 4 punts, 2 times running out the clock at the end of a half, 1 fumble, 1 turned it over on downs. UWW had 663 yards of total offense, including 463 yards rushing.

UW-Eau Claire 23 St. John's 20 (OT)
The Blugolds held the ninth ranked Johnnies to just 282 yards of total offense, including 138 passing yards. After falling behind 10-0, UW-EC scored 17 straight points before Joe Boyle scored on a 1 yard run with six seconds left in regulation time. The ensuing extra point tied the game and sent it into overtime. Freshman Joel Sweeney carried the ball on all 7 plays of Eau Claire's overtime possession, including the game winning touchdown from the 2.

UW-Platteville 21 University of Dubuque 17
The Pioneers scored two touchdowns in the final 7:30 of the game to record the win. The total yardage for each team was nearly identical (UW-P 433, UD 432). All American wide receiver Michael Zweifel caught 10 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown for Dubuque. After being limited with a shoulder tear on the first day of training camp, wide receiver Darin Blaser fell one short of the UW-P school record for receptions in a game with 16. Blaser's 16th reception was a game winning 17 yard TD with 1:12 left in the game.

Mary Hardin-Baylor 24 LaCrosse 19
After racing out to a 19-0 lead, the Eagles offense had 4 consecutive "3 and out" series. After turning the ball over 5 times last week, LaCrosse won the turnover battle 4-0. UMHB outgained UW-L 389-218 and LaCrosse managed only 12 first downs. The final 25:19 of the game, UW-L gained only 10 net yards.

UW-Stout 27 Jamestown College 24
Richard Marteney's 34 yard field goal with 1:15 left in the 4th quarter proved the game winner for the Blue Devils. An interception by Zach Pomputis sealed it with 51 seconds remaining. For the second week in a row, the Blue Devils failed to get their running game untracked gaining only 3.4 yards per carry. A week ago, the 2009 WIAC #2 rushing team averaged only 1.6 ypc on 30 attempts. QB Ross Carey has attempted 74 passes in the first two games of 2010. The most passes attempted in any 2 game stretch for the Blue Devils in 2009 was 53.

Mount Union 45 UW-Oshkosh 28
The surprise of this game may have been the UW-O rushing attack which gained 198 yards on 5.2 yards per carry over 38 attempts. Mount scored a TD with 4:41 remaining in the 2nd quarter to take a 21-7 lead. Oshkosh was never closer than 14 points to the Purple Raiders after that point. The Purple Raiders averaged 6.5 yards per play, Titans averaged 6.0.

St. Thomas 27 River Falls 3
The Tommies recovered a 2nd quarter fumble on the River Falls 34 and scored it's second consecutive TD 6 plays later to take a 14-3 lead with 40 seconds left in the first half. On the first drive of the 3rd quarter, the Falcons failed on a fake punt from midfield. STU took advantage of the short field and scored again to take a 20-3 lead. UW-RF was held to 3.6 yards per play by the stingy Tommie defense.
