WIAC PROJECTIONS WEEK 2

#9 St. John’s at Eau Claire

Johnnies won big (56-10) last week against an overmatched Northwestern(MN). Bluegolds outscored Bethel (TN) 35-31 behind 181 yards rushing and 3 TD’s from Freshman Joel Sweeney. However, Austin Neu attempted only 10 passes and the Bluegolds will have to have a more more balanced attack to defeat the 9th Ranked Johnnies.

Score Projection:

St. John’s 31

Eau Claire 21

#6 Mary Hardin-Baylor at UW-LaCrosse

In last week’s loss, the Eagles turned the ball over 5 times, were susceptible to giving up big plays, and allowed 280 yards rushing. They can’t allow any of those things to happen if they hope to stay with the powerful Crusaders.

Score Projection:

UMHB 35

LaCrosse 21

#2 Mount Union at UW-Oshkosh

This is week 2 of a daunting non-conference slate for the Titans. Last week, UW-O played Central College tough before falling 34-28. Mount Union is untested at QB and RB, but over the years, that never seems to matter. The Purple Raiders’ defense is young, but undoubtedly talented and the Titans will have to run the ball better than last week to have a chance.

Score Projection:

Mount Union: 45

UW-O: 17

Dubuque at Platteville

The Pioneers are looking to start 2-0 after a decisive victory over a self-destructing Buena Vista last week. UW-P held up against a passing attack that had 51 attempts last week. The Pioneers gave up only 25 completions and had 3 interceptions. Hopefully that will have prepared them well for All American wide receiver Michael Zweifel who caught 12 passes for 162 yards last week. UD will look to fill the air with footballs against the Pioneers, while UW-P will likely try to control the ball.

Score Projection:

UW-Platteville 24

DU 21

River Falls at St. Thomas

The Falcons take on the 5th Ranked Tommies after losing 35-21 to #11 Ohio Northern last week. UW-RF will have to hold down the powerful Tommie rushing attack that gained 246 yards last week. The upset minded Falcons will also try to establish the run on Saturday as they gained 252 yards last week. If the UW-RF holds up defensively, they could pull an early season shocker.

Score Projection:

UW-River Falls 23

St. Thomas 21

Jamestown (ND) at UW-Stout

UW-Stout coaches were undoubtedly looking at last week as a chance to see what QB Ross Carey could accomplish. He threw 44 passes last week after a 2009 season that saw the Blue Devils throw less than 20 passes in half of their games and never more than 32. The running game never got established and the Blue Devils lost 14-13 in overtime. Jamestown outlasted Peru State 56-54 in triple overtime last week. The Jimmies gained 577 total yards, but also gave up 8 touchdowns in Peru State’s last 10 possessions.

Score Projection:

UW-Stout 31

Jamestown 20

Dakota State at UW-Whitewater

The Trojans come to Wisconsin after suffering a 38-7 season opening loss at home to Midland Lutheran College. In that loss, Dakota State gave up 306 yards rushing. Oh oh…

Score Projection:

UW-Whitewater 70

Dakota State 0
